While you always hear about Hollywood being the world capital of show business, some of the biggest names in movies, music, and sports have come out of Canada. Here is a look at eight Canadian celebrities who have struck it big and made lasting names for themselves around the world.
1. Mike Meyers
After graduating from high school, the comedian immediately joined the Canadian touring company of the popular Second City comedy troupe.
After touring the world doing improv, he settled down in the U.S. and was picked up by “Saturday Night Live.”
During his 5-year tenure on the hit variety show, Myers played many memorable roles including Wayne Campbell, Linda Richmond (host of the popular sketch “Coffee Talk”), and Dieter.
The actor transitioned into film roles while he was still appearing on “SNL,” beginning with the hit “Wayne’s World” franchise. After leaving the show, he starred in the “Austin Powers” trilogy, which really made him a worldwide name and cemented his spot among the today’s top comedians.
Myers’ most lucrative role of his career took place off-camera when he provided the voice for the title character in DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek” franchise. He voiced the tough ogre with a soft side in four feature films as well as TV specials and theme park attractions.
Today, Mike Meyers is worth an estimated $175 million US.
