Comedian and TV personality Joan Rivers is currently in a coma as a result of the botched operation to her vocal cords over the weekend.
The 81-year-old funny-lady joked that she would be going in for a “small operation” to her vocal cords, which had become raspy and sore.
As a result of some as-yet-unspecified complication, Joan went into cardiac and respiratory arrest. The doctors then placed her into a medically induced coma to try to stabilize her condition.
Although Rivers’ doctors have now begun the delicate process of extracting her from the coma, many have expressed worries that this incident will leave Joan in a vegetative state, or that she will at least require the assistance of a wheelchair after the operation. The surgery was performed at Mount Sinai Hospital on New York City’s Upper East Side.
