Ten Things you didn’t know about Drake

January 7, 2014

There’s a lot of gossip and things you might know about drake, but here is a few things you might not know.

Drake Live in Florida

1. He’s Canadian

What’s that? One of the biggest musical acts in America isn’t even American? It’s true.

The rap phenomenon was born in Toronto in 1986, and spent much of his life growing up in lower-income areas while he and his mother struggled to make ends meet after his parents’ divorce.

2. He was named the new Global Ambassador for the Toronto Raptors

As one of the biggest names in music, and being a native of Toronto, it only made sense for the Raptors to get Drake involved somehow.

Toronto will host the 2016 All-Star Game, and Drake will be host of the festivities and entertainment, as well as a consultant to the team about its rebranding efforts in Toronto.

3. He was a child star

Drake first got his start as an actor on the Canadian television show Degrassi: The Next Generation.

He has stated several times that this was the only money his family was making at the time, and that “a season of Canadian television is under a teacher’s salary.”

4. His father was also a musician

Dennis Graham is from Memphis, Tennessee originally and worked as a drummer performing with several different acts, including the rock legend Jerry Lee Lewis.

Two of his uncles are musical artists as well, so it’s no surprise that he followed them into the family business.

5. He’s still acting

Not only does Drake have a history of acting, he’s also got a small role in one of the biggest movies out there right now, Anchorman 2: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, where he has a short cameo as a Ron Burgundy fan.

6. He’s a voice actor as well

With all his time spent in recording studios, Drake is a natural at standing in front of a microphone and making great things happen.

In 2012 he played Ethan in Ice Age 4: Continental Drift.

Since we already discussed how Drake was born in Canada, it only makes sense that he’d have picked up a hockey stick at least once in his life, right?

The rapper and former child star briefly played minor hockey with the Weston Red Wings.

8. He went back to high school and got his diploma

In 2012, after a long hiatus to work on his music career and previously dropping out of his second high school, Vaughn Road Academy, Drake came back to get his diploma, just to finish what he started.

9. He’s a brilliant marketer

Drake didn’t follow the traditional method of writing music for years and years and finally getting discovered.

Thanks to the power of the internet, after releasing his self-produced album Room for Improvement, he quickly caught the attention of big industry acts like Lil Wayne.

10. He has the most #1 singles of any other rapper on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart

Already in Drake’s young career he has surpassed rap legend Jay-Z as the artist with the most #1 singles.

This is a huge accomplishment, seeing that only six years earlier he was self-producing and distributing his own mixtapes for free.
