PSY, who by 2012 was already the music king of South Korea, released his single “Gangnam Style” in July of 2012 and saw a meteoric rise in international fame.
The single now has over 2 billion hits on YouTube, and still receives attention years after its release. Now PSY has delivered another international YouTube sensation with his single “Hangover”, which features a wacky music video complete with rap legend Snoop Dogg. The single already has over 40 million views since its release on June 8th.
Snoop Dogg, who is arguably one of the most recognized celebrity icons in America, has been known for his business savvy. This pairing with PSY is easily a smart move in the music industry, as the only thing better than the release of one superstar’s single, is having another equally famous superstar feature on it.
This is evidenced by the fact that in just four short days, “Hangover” has received more than 10 million views per day! In the music industry, it isn’t necessarily important to write a song that evokes strong emotions or even be talented anymore. Being able to effectively market yourself in the right way actually leads to fame just as fast, if not faster. Just look at the Kardashians.
However, in the case of Snoop Dogg and PSY, there is not only boatloads of talent, but business know-how. Both artists have built empires out of their careers, and both artists have legions of fans willing to hear what each one has done next. Combine both together, and you have a single that will automatically achieve fame in seconds just because of the artist’s names.
